Have you already written, planned, or even thought about your New Year’s resolutions? These may be things you want to start, habits you need the discipline to stop, or important decisions you need to make. The best way to begin the new year is by seeking wisdom from God’s Word, and this is the heart of the National Bible Month (NBM) celebration every January!
The 2025 National Bible Month stood as an example of this growing movement. From bustling cities to quiet mountain towns, Filipinos from all walks of life—students, teachers, church leaders, public servants, and ordinary citizens—came together to celebrate the Bible as a source of hope and guidance.
Creative and meaningful National Bible Month activities took place across the country. In Dumaguete, Ikthus Church held a 24-hour Bible reading marathon. In Natonin, Cordillera; students, Christian groups, and even the town mayor took part in a Bible parade. In the south, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region XI reiterated its support for National Bible Month through Memorandum Circular No. 2017-111, encouraging participation in the celebration among local leaders and communities.
Schools and public spaces also became platforms for God’s Word. Six schools hosted PBS’s Bible Appreciation activities in January, with PBS staff engaging students through storytelling, dance, and discussions on how the Bible guides us in real-life situations. Other schools conducted their own Bible-themed programs, while local government offices in twelve cities partnered with PBS to integrate Bible reading in their respective flag ceremonies and give public servants their own copies of the New Testament to read and reflect on.
The National Bible Month is a month-long initiative of the Philippine Bible Society (PBS) that encourages Filipinos to read, engage with, and be transformed by the Word of God. The annual Bible celebration traces its roots to 1982, when President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. signed Presidential Proclamation No. 2242, declaring the celebration of Bible Sunday and National Bible Week to promote moral values and personal discipline among Filipinos.
Over the years, this commitment was strengthened through succeeding proclamations. President Corazon Aquino moved the celebration from November to January, emphasizing that Filipinos should begin the year by reading and consulting the Word of God. President Fidel Ramos later reaffirmed the importance of Bible reading through Presidential Proclamation No. 1067.
In 2017, the celebration officially expanded to include the entire month of January when President Rodrigo Duterte signed Presidential Proclamation No. 124, declaring January as National Bible Month, with its final week as National Bible Week and its last Sunday as Bible Sunday.
Since then, participation in National Bible Month has continued to grow, with more Filipinos across the country actively sharing, celebrating, and living out the Word of God.
PBS also reached more people with new episodes of Bible Talks, focusing on the 2025 theme “God’s Word: Source of H.O.P.E. (Harmony, Obedience, Peace, Empowerment).” Children were encouraged to grow in faith through the iProclaim: Kids Edition, while PBS staff were encouraged to steward and care for God’s creation in accordance with his Word through a coastal clean-up and Scripture distribution at the Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The month’s celebration culminated in “A Celebration of Hope,” a worship-filled event led by the Papuri! Ministry Singers that brought many different voices together in praise and thanksgiving to God. More than just a series of activities, National Bible Month 2025 became a nationwide movement of faith, unity, and love for Scripture.
Building on this momentum, National Bible Month 2026 will be celebrated with the theme “God’s Word Brings L.I.F.E. (Love, Integrity, Faith, Engagement) to Our Hearts and to Our Homes,” which was drawn from John 13:34 and Deuteronomy 32:47.
“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”
— John 13:34 (NAB)
“These teachings are not empty words; they are your very life. Obey them and you will live long in that land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy.”
— Deuteronomy 32:47 (GNT)
Throughout January 2026, PBS will be conducting various National Bible Month activities, including:
Bible Appreciation activities in public and private schools, featuring Mga Kuwento Nina Bib at Lia
Bible distribution and flag-raising ceremonies in Metro Manila LGUs
Creation Care Workshop
iProclaim: Family Edition
Usapang Pamilya: Men and Women Summit
Families, churches, and communities are encouraged not only to participate in these activities, but also to organize their own, celebrating the Scriptures through Bible studies, reading challenges, workshops, and other Scripture appreciation initiatives.
As the nation looks ahead to a new year, the National Bible Month continues to remind Filipinos that God’s Word not only guides our personal decisions but also the way that we love, support, and grow together as followers of the Lord. The Bible is not only meant to be read by believers, but also to be shared, lived out, and cherished in every season of life. May every heart and every home become a place where faith, hope, and wisdom from God can flourish.
Stay tuned for more National Bible Month updates that will be shared on the Philippine Bible Society’s official social media platforms!
