The idea for a memorial library began years ago, during the development of the Children’s Bible sa Wikang Filipino. At that time, Bishop Daniel Arichea Jr., Ph.D, served as the project’s consultant, guiding the translation team with his wisdom and expertise. One of the team members, Mrs. Perry Cartera—now the General Secretary of the Philippine Bible Society—had the opportunity to visit Bishop Arichea’s home in Baguio. She was inspired by his floor-to-ceiling collection of reference books. The shelves were filled with Bible commentaries, dictionaries, and various other tools that supported Bible translation and study. Seeing their great value, she envisioned preserving and sharing these resources through the PBS Library, so that others could benefit from them as well.
That vision came to life on June 2, 2025, when a special section of the PBS Library was officially dedicated to honor the life and legacy of the late Bishop Arichea, a respected Bible scholar, professor, church leader, and former President and Chairman of the Philippine Bible Society (1997–1998, 2001–2005). This dedicated area houses his personal book collection, intended to be a valuable resource for students, translators, teachers, and anyone seeking to grow in their understanding of God’s Word.
The dedication was a simple yet meaningful program attended by his former students from Union Theological Seminary, leaders from the United Methodist Church, and some PBS staff. Heartfelt messages were shared, including one from his wife, Dr. Ruth Arichea, who lovingly recalled his life of humble service and deep commitment to the Scriptures.
Dr. Arichea’s influence in Bible translation, both in the Philippines and across Asia, has impacted countless lives. Through this memorial library, PBS is excited to welcome people from different churches and backgrounds, especially those who wish to study, grow, and be equipped for ministry—to explore his collection, learn from his legacy, and be inspired to serve with the same passion for God’s Word.
The Dr. Daniel C. Arichea Jr. Memorial Library will soon be open to the public. Stay tuned for further announcements!
