World Bible Leaders Review UBS Secretariat to Effectively Support National Bible Societies
Seven general secretaries and senior officers from different National Bible Societies convened as the UBS Fellowship and its Global Ministry Team (GMT) Review Group last February 10-11 in London, United Kingdom. These key leaders, from five continents, were from the Bible societies of Ghana, Guatemala, New Zealand, Palestine, the Philippines, Scotland, and USA. Two representatives from the UBS-GMT also joined the meeting as resource persons. The Review Group was established by the UBS Executive Board.
Chaired by Nora Lucero, General Secretary of the Philippine Bible Society, the meeting served as an avenue to re-evaluate the structures and services of the UBS Fellowship and GMT to effectively support Bible Societies in their fulfillment of the Philadelphia Promise. The Philadelphia Promise is the resulting document during the UBS World Assembly in Philadelphia, USA in May 2016. It stipulated eight guiding strategic directions for the UBS and member Bible Societies from 2017 until 2022 — focusing on the audiences, strengthening church relations, shared ownership of mission, resourcing mission, digital technology supporting the whole Bible Lifecycle, building leadership capacity, achieving mission sustainability, and guidelines for holistic ministry.
Discussions during the Review Group meeting revolved around exploring strategic and practical responses to various crucial matters so as to better support the worldwide family of Bible Societies. The Review Group is slated for another meeting on March 27-28 in Berlin, Germany before submitting its conclusive report with recommendations to the UBS Executive Board in June 2017.
