Last June 26, 2015, about 500 Grade 8 students received their copy of the Bible during the maiden ride of The Word Riders Philippines, a group of motorbike enthusiasts who have partnered with the Philippine Bible Society to ”ride to bring the Bible to every Filipino home.”
The riders, led by PBS Trustee Atty. Gerard Mosquera, first came to Meycauayan National High School in the City of Meycauayan in the province of Bulacan. “More than providing the copy of the Bible to students, we hope that God’s Word would eventually be shared to their families,” he said.
During the distribution, the riders were encouraged to have a moment with the students before handing them their copy of the Bible. “This, and the personal dedication of the Bible to the young student, will surely make the impact of the distribution more powerful,” he explained.
One of the riders, Atty. Tecson John Lim, encouraged a student to read the Bible as he had. “I was able to achieve a lot of things because of the Bible. During my moments of darkness, it became my lamp that led me to where I should go. I hope it also becomes a lamp unto your feet as well,” he said.

The riders also distributed Bibles to students in National Power Corporation National High School in the Angat Dam Watershed Reservation in Norzagaray, Bulacan, and in Paradise Farms National High School in the City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.
Bishop Jonel Milan, also a PBS Trustee, joined the maiden ride, along with PBS General Secretary Dr. Nora Lucero, PBS Associate General Secretary Esperanza Cartera, PBS Communications Supervisor Raymond Francisco, and around 12 other volunteers.
A contingent from the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) led by PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Superintendent Elizabeth Velasquez also participated in the Word Riders maiden ride.
In her brief message during the simple send-off ceremony, Dr. Lucero praised God for the opportunity to bring His Living Word to homes of poor Filipinos through the support of the Word Riders. She underscored the importance of making the Bible readily available to everyone. “If people read the Bible, meditate on it, and live by it, their lives and that of their families, communities, and even the nation will change. That’s why I praise the Lord for this day and am very grateful for the support of The Word Riders in bringing God’s Word to the homes of poor Filipinos,” she said.
In the same send-off ceremony, no less than PBS President and Chairman Chief Justice Reynato Puno (ret.) led the dedicatory prayer before dispatching the riders for their mission of bringing God’s Word to high school students in Bulacan.
The Word Riders Philippines was inspired by the Bible Society of South Africa’s Word Riders that started in 2011. Since then, Riders travel yearly to different communities of South Africa to distribute Bibles among Grade 7 learners especially to those children who cannot afford to buy a Bible.
