It Began with a Proclamation: Presidential Proclamations throughout Philippine History and the Need for a National Bible Month Celebration

God’s Word contains a message so beautiful, true, and powerful that it can change the life of anyone who gets to read it. To this day, wherever you are in the world, the Bible remains relevant and timely. And when heeded and obeyed, it can change a nation for the better.

The Philippine Bible Society (PBS) has endeavored to introduce people to the Bible’s transforming power through all means possible. One such means is the celebration of the National Bible Month (NBM) which is currently backed up by incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte’s Presidential Proclamation No. 124.

An excerpt from Presidential Proclamation No. 124:

…it is fitting and proper that national attention be focused on the important role being played by reading and study of the Bible in molding the moral fiber of our society.

Every year since 1982, people from all over the Philippines have been celebrating the importance of the Bible in nation-building. Churches come together through parades, motorcades, and peaceful rallies as they proclaim the yearly themes of the NBM celebration. Sermons and homilies focus on the Bible’s role in changing the people’s lives during National Bible Sunday. People distribute Scripture materials and tracts along the streets and other public places, while others put up streamers and posters to call extra attention to the month’s festivities.

The National Bible Month reminds the Filipino people of the primacy of God’s Word over their lives and decisions. If we want to see true development and lasting change in our lives as a people and as a country, then we need to follow the Word’s statutes and obey its precepts. Truly, what the world needs now is God’s Word–the Bible!

These are just ten of the most basic ways for one to celebrate the National Bible Month (NBM). But we encourage you to get even more creative!

If you want to know even more about any of these ten suggestions, please feel free to connect with us. Kindly send us your NBM email inquiries as early as possible with the subject“NBM INQUIRY – [FIRST AND LAST NAME]” to contactus@bible.org.ph.

On the NBM 2020 theme

“The theme gives us clarity that the Bible becomes the base of a nation–the nation’s heart. The year ahead may have many challenges but the Bible is our basis and guide. The Bible is what will unite us in times of change and in our journey of growing together. We can’t see total transformation in a year. But we can’t lose that clarity or clearness and continuity of vision to work towards a nation transformed by the Bible, united by God’s Word.”

– Dr. Nora G. Lucero (PBS General Secretary)

“It is a blessing to be able to support our local churches in need of Bibles and Bible study programs. It is our hope that they not only grow in terms of membership but also have the heart to extend spiritual help to others, just like how they have received help.”

Ptr. Callum TabadaUCCP Cosmopolitan Administrative Pastor (AACP benefactor)

“We are thankful since each individual now has a Bible. Our members will no longer have a hard time reading. Thank you also for the discipleship materials for these will help all in getting to know Jesus and to know how to be a better Christian.”

Ptr. Eric BulanteChurch Pastor, Shepherd's Church in Hills of Zion, Talim Island (AACP beneficiary)

“Philippine Bible Society organizes trainings that really respond to the needs of people who are suffering.
It has well-equipped leaders who facilitate trainings and workshops.
Its mission to reach out to Filipinos using God’s Word is fulfilled through its works.”

Miriam del RosarioExecutive director at The Birthright Educators Foundation

“I praise and thank our Almighty God that, through PBS, I now own a Poimen version of MBB (Magandang Balita Biblia) in the national language of the Philippines – Tagalog.
Knowing Matthew 10:32-33, I read and study the Bible so that I will not be dismayed when the Lord Jesus Christ comes. Life is too short compared with the promise of eternal life in God’s Kingdom.”

I think this is very helpful to every readers. The word of the Lord are the food of our soul which we always need every minute of our life. I dont often read the Bible but everytime i open it, God was always like in front of me and speaking as what is something i'm just needing to hear. He speaks to me and i can feel it. A million thanks to You my Lord.
