DISASTER ALERT: Typhoon Ondoy Left Many Fellowmen in Distress
Last September 26, 2009, the typhoon “Ketsana” (locally known as “Ondoy”) has intensely struck Luzon greatly affecting mostly Metro Manila areas. Ketsana brought immense magnitude of floodwaters and mud caused by continuous raining, with 341 millimeters within 6 hours.
The surge of heavy rains caused the overflow of rivers and creeks into the cities which damaged many structures including houses, roads and public walls. Affected families sought refuge by ascending to the higher floors or roofs of their houses. Motorists and the greater public were stranded on the roads because many areas were already clogged by flood.
Many areas are still inaccessible due to muddy floodwaters making it difficult for rescue teams and relief operations to reach victims who have been awaiting assistance for 3 days since the typhoon hit. According to the report of the National Disaster Coordinating Council, as of September 27, 2009 7AM, 51 casualties, 21 missing person cases and 4 people injured. Statistic reports confirmed that 54,891 families or 279,763 people suffered as a result of the typhoon.
