Adapting to the Evolving Cuyonon Language

August 6, 2018

Holding the Cuyonon Reviewer’s Workshop last April 10-12, 2018 gave the Philippine Bible Society (PBS) the means to equip reviewers who will assist the translation committee in revising the 1982 Cuyonon New Testament version.

A translation committee was formed last June 2017 and they have completed some books already. In particular, they have finished drafting Matthew and Mark. Now, PBS needed another set of people to be brought on board to review what the translation team has already completed.

The first translation for Cuyonon started in 1960 and was published in 1982. Since then, the Cuyonon language has changed. Today, there are many words used in the 1982 New Testament that now sound archaic to younger Cuyonons.

A total of three consultants facilitated the workshop. Bishop Daniel Arichea Jr., Rev. Dr. Edgar Ebojo, and Rev. Dr. Rhoneil Arevalo taught a diverse group including Roman Catholic priests, pastors, and a few from Seventh- Day Adventist, PCEC churches, independent churches, and more.

The Reviewers’ Workshop was held in Puerto Princesa at the Angelic Mansion. The Apostolic Vicar of Taytay, Most Rev. Edgardo S. Juanich, D.D., whose ministry involves the Cuyonon-speaking people of Palawan, also graced the workshop with his presence. PBS is overflowing with gratitude for the support Bishop Juanich has shown for this project.
