A Time of Thanksgiving: UBS World Day of Prayer 2019

Being a witness to a group of three or four people who are praying as one is already a very moving sight—so imagine the joy of seeing more than a hundred! What we experienced last May 9, 2019 (Thursday) during the UBS World Day of Prayer event at the PBS Ministry Center further reinforces the fact that we are stronger when together.

The annual UBS World Day of Prayer is a commemoration of the founding anniversary of the United Bible Societies, which is a global fellowship of Bible Societies in over 200 countries and territories worldwide. We are all driven by the common goal of making the Bible available and accessible to everyone in languages that they understand and in the medium of their choice.

– The oldest Bible Society is the British and Foreign Bible Society. (Established in 1804).
– The youngest Bible Society is the Bible Society of South Sudan. (Established in 2011).

We had 117 attendees — a mix of PBS members, Trauma Healing Program participants, and PBS staff — spread out across PBS’s 3rd floor Worship Hall. This year, we focused on “thanksgiving.” This theme is only apt because day by day, without fail, we are continuously reminded of how faithful, loving, and good the Lord is. We feel His mighty hand moving in and through the PBS ministry.

The theme verse that guided our entire event was 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 from the New Testament: Pinoy Version.

16 Be joyful always, 17 pray at all times, 18 be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Good News Translation (GNT)

After starting the day with a guiding prayer, praise and worship, and meditation on the UBS prayer points, an hour-long round of nonstop prayer began. We set up five long tables in the PBS Worship Hall, with each table standing as a physical representation of our main thrusts: Translation, Publishing, Distribution, Scripture Engagement and Advocacy, and Mission Sustainability.

The attendees were divided into groups and were guided to stop at each table or “booth.” Each table had assigned PBS staff members who were tasked to present thanksgiving and prayer points for their specific thrust. Praise God for we had the opportunity to share our future programs and projects with the attendees as well.

Notable ministry milestones that you can include in your thanksgiving prayer as a PBS friend, member, or supporter:

  1. Translation
    • PBS had eight (8) launch events for eight (8) Scripture offerings in 2018. Six (6) New Testaments and two (2) Bibles!
  2. Publishing
    • PBS produced 15.4 million copies of Scripture materials in 2018.
  3. Distribution
    • PBS distributed 19.1 million Scripture materials nationwide in 2018.
  4. Scripture Engagement and Advocacy
    • Thousands of Bibles were distributed and hundreds of lives were touched as our core flagship programs (National Bible Month, Faith Comes by Hearing, Word Riders Philippines, Trauma Healing Program, and Adopt a Church Program) continued to grow and flourish.
  5. Mission Sustainability
    • We officially welcomed 905 new PBS members into the PBS family.

The thanksgiving-related prayer points that we focused on were based on our 2018 Stewardship Report. We presented this report last April 27, 2019 (Saturday) at the Manila Prince Hotel during our 54th Annual Membership Meeting.

Towards the end of the program, we gave the attendees time to pray by pairs and individually. We also challenged them to complete a very sensitive, but rewarding activity. We encouraged the attendees to either call or text their family members, and to let them know how much they are appreciated.

Dr. Nora Lucero, PBS General Secretary, led us in our closing prayer.

We are incredibly grateful for the favor and blessings that the Lord continues to shower upon the Philippine Bible Society. One such blessing is the unity and solidarity that we felt during last May 9’s UBS World Day of Prayer gathering.

To God be all the glory and praise!

“It is a blessing to be able to support our local churches in need of Bibles and Bible study programs. It is our hope that they not only grow in terms of membership but also have the heart to extend spiritual help to others, just like how they have received help.”

“We are thankful since each individual now has a Bible. Our members will no longer have a hard time reading. Thank you also for the discipleship materials for these will help all in getting to know Jesus and to know how to be a better Christian.”

“I praise and thank our Almighty God that, through PBS, I now own a Poimen version of MBB (Magandang Balita Biblia) in the national language of the Philippines – Tagalog.
Knowing Matthew 10:32-33, I read and study the Bible so that I will not be dismayed when the Lord Jesus Christ comes. Life is too short compared with the promise of eternal life in God’s Kingdom.”

I think this is very helpful to every readers. The word of the Lord are the food of our soul which we always need every minute of our life. I dont often read the Bible but everytime i open it, God was always like in front of me and speaking as what is something i'm just needing to hear. He speaks to me and i can feel it. A million thanks to You my Lord.
