35,000 Drug Surrenderees Receive Hope Through the Word

We cannot close ourselves off from the swelling number of drug dependents who have surrendered to government authorities in light of the nationwide war against illegal drugs. Like the prodigal son returning home for redemption, these are souls who need help and a chance to have a life with meaning. Spiritual intervention has been a proven effective approach to combat addiction, making God’s Word the best aid they could have.

This is exactly what the group of motorcycle enthusiasts called Word Riders Philippines, together with the Philippine Bible Society and in partnership with the Philippine National Police, brought for the 35,000 drug surrenderees in the Ilocos Region last February 4 and 5. Copies of the New Testament were distributed to recovering drug dependents who came from Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte.

Exposing them to God’s Word and feeding them spiritual food would help them steer away from substance abuse.  PSSUPT Leo M. Francisco, the acting Provincial Director of La Union Police Provincial Office, affirmed this saying that the Bibles will help and guide the drug surrenderees in their recovery and return to society.

In a short program conducted during the Bible distribution event, Pastor Ramon Del Valle of Victory Christian Church also challenged the recovering drug dependents to read the Bible. “By reading it, you will find freedom, peace, truth, and guidance in your daily living,” he said.

The same challenge was also posed by Pastor Pepe Vea of Laoag International Praise Center. He shared, “There are many dare challenges today in the internet, but this time, I want to challenge you. Please read that Bible from beginning to end, and you will see and experience transformation. It will free you from your addiction because God will help you in this process.”

The Bible that each recovering drug dependent received will help them start anew and strengthen them in their pursuit towards the straight path of obedience. Let us continue to uphold them in our prayers so that the Bibles they received will truly be their guide for a life wholly surrendered unto the Lord.
